I didn’t think I was going today after 3 epic sessions in a week
especially after waking to rain. It was carnival day in Felixstowe and the
last thing you want to see is overweight Majorite’s so after a trip up
town we checked the conditions – it looked breezy and sunny:) So I made a
sandwich and took Mag to The Dip, it was very quiet and no other
windsurfers. The gauge was reading 16 mph onshore, perfect for some more
cruising. I rigged big as Mag walked home along the prom and was taking
some pics of the nice blue sky when Swainy turned up, saw the conditions
and went to get his gear saying that David Coles and Mark Smalling were on
the way:)
Then as usual when I went to set off the beach the wind dropped, I wobbled
out got going briefly in the rough water in the River Deben, turned and
planned more on the way in as the breeze was coming back. Swainy was
rigging his big kit while David rigged his small Formula kit, 9.6! It was
time to have some fun, beating over a mile and a half out through the wild
river before turning down the coast. I could then make The Manor Martello
in one tack passing easily Jacobs Ladder and the pier with the water rough.
The broad 3.50-mile reach back was as much fun as you can have on a board
sailing parallel with the beach. I came ashore for a break as Mark Smalling
questioned the need for such a big sail but it had been perfect. With no
sign of Swainy I headed back down the coast and found him down at
Landguard, he had gybed a couple more times and gone further than me! We
meet up at The Manor so he could set up his go-pro to catch the action:) We
had a couple of false starts before setting off agreeing to turn at The
Fludgers bouy and return. Flying broad up the coast we met Colsey coming
the other way. We all joined up and set off down again but the wind had
turned slightly and I only just made it past the pier!
The three of us had a chat just past the pier as the wind had notched up,
it was going to be an interesting trip back. Swainy wanted to film so I set
of first followed by Colesy, it was on the limit for me on the long reach
back and my back leg was beginning to sing!!! Colesy was struggling to keep
his big Formula board on the water but the big freeride board were great in
winds approaching 20 knots! In the end, I was pleased to make it back to
the beach as Mark Smalling was also way overpowered and not having much
fun:( Andy Marshall had come down and went out with 6m having a hectic half
hour. The sun had gone and we were getting cold so decided against rigging
smaller so we packed up as the wind dropped!
What a week, four top sessions and no wind for tomorrow – result:)
PS - some wally in a yacht had run aground in the river, seems to have
ignored the bouys and was going to have to wait 7/8 hours before they can
try and re float and it will be dark - good luck to them. He was making the
most of his boat lining over by sitting in his tender cleaning the
bottom!
